Christmas fragrance candles often take you straight back to a kitchen full of spice. For many British families, that kitchen smells strongest on Stir-up Sunday. This year it falls on 22 November, the Sunday before Advent begins. It is the day the pudding gets mixed, the bowl gets passed around, and the house starts to smell like Christmas.
Stir-up Sunday and the smell of Christmas at home
The Dorset History Centre explains where the name comes from. It is taken from an old church prayer read on that Sunday, which begins with the words "stir up". Over time, the phrase became linked with stirring the Christmas pudding.
Families would gather to mix it together. Each person took a turn with the spoon and made a wish. The mixture then rested for weeks, so the flavours could deepen before Christmas Day.
What stays with most of us is not the recipe. It is the smell of warm spice, dried fruit and orange filling the kitchen on a cold, dark afternoon.
Why does the smell of Christmas bring back memories?
BrainFacts, from the Society for Neuroscience, says the nose links to two parts of the brain. One handles emotions. The other handles learning and memory. So a scent can bring back a feeling before you know why.
Christmas spice scents to light this season
You do not need a pudding on the stove to bring that feeling back. A few of the fragrances in our Glow Collection advent calendar follow the same old kitchen notes.
- Christmas Spice: nutmeg, cinnamon and clove
- Clove Actually: orange, clove and cinnamon
- Cinnamon Apple: stewed apple, cinnamon and citrus
- Christmas Shortbread: evergreen, wood fire and shortbread
Fruit sits alongside the spice, too. Across the Glow range, Fruity is our biggest-selling fragrance family, and Spiced Pomegranate brings both together.
Making memories with Christmas fragrance candles
Stir-up Sunday is a lovely moment to start a new habit. Light a candle while the pudding is mixed. Then, from 1 December, open one door a day and light a tealight in the evening. Each one burns for three to four hours, long enough for a film or a slow supper. A few years from now, that scent may be the one that takes your family back.
Quick answers
When is Stir-up Sunday in 2026?
Stir-up Sunday is on 22 November 2026. It is always the last Sunday before Advent. Families traditionally mix their Christmas pudding that day, so it has weeks to rest before Christmas.
What do Christmas fragrance candles smell like?
Many lean on warm spice, such as cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Some add fruit, like orange, apple or cranberry. Others bring in pine and cedar for the smell of a fresh tree.
