Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and plenty of us will be at home with the door half open for trick-or-treaters. It is a good night for great smelling candles. The pumpkins are carved, the sweets are in a bowl, and the house can smell of apple, spice and something warm from the oven. Here is how to set the scene and keep it safe.
Great Smelling Candles for Halloween Night
Halloween scents borrow from the autumn kitchen. Think stewed apple, cinnamon, clove, toffee and soft vanilla. These are the smells of bonfire toffee and baked apples, and they feel comforting on a cold night.
Keep it to one scent per room. Two strong candles side by side tend to muddle each other. Put a spicy one in the kitchen and something sweeter in the lounge, where you will sit once the knocking stops.
What scents go well with Halloween?
Apple, cinnamon, clove and vanilla are the classics. They feel warm and familiar on a cold, dark night. If you like fruit, cranberry or blackberry with a little spice works well too.
Pumpkin Lanterns and Candle Safety
This is the one part of the night to plan ahead. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service advises using battery LED candles or tealights inside pumpkins, not real flames. It also says to keep candle-lit pumpkins away from doorways, paths and steps where people may brush past.
Costumes need care as well. The same service says to keep costumes, wigs, capes and decorations away from candles and heaters. It adds that even costumes that meet safety standards can still catch fire.
- LED lights in pumpkins on the doorstep
- Scented candles indoors, on a stable surface
- Capes and wigs kept well clear of flames
A Cosy Night In After the Trick-or-Treaters
Once the last knock has gone, close the door and light your real candle. Pick a table away from the hallway, and blow it out before bed.
Halloween also starts the countdown. Bonfire Night is next, then Advent. Our 2026 Advent Calendar carries on where Halloween leaves off, with Cinnamon Apple, Spiced Pomegranate and Christmas Shortbread among its 12 fragrances.
Quick answers
Is it safe to put a real candle in a pumpkin?
Fire services advise against it. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service recommends battery LED candles or tealights inside pumpkins, especially near doorways, paths and steps where people may brush past.
What is the best candle scent for autumn evenings?
Warm, spiced scents suit autumn best. Apple with cinnamon, clove with orange, or a soft vanilla all feel cosy when it is dark by five. Choose one you would happily smell all evening.
Have a happy, safe Halloween, and enjoy the quiet once the sweets run out. When November turns to December, the Glow Collection Advent Calendar gives you a new scent to light each night, right up to Christmas Eve.
