Jasmine Candle Scent: Why It Smells Sweet and a Little Wild

A jasmine candle smells sweet, rich and a little wild. That might surprise you if you know the yellow jasmine on British walls. It flowers on bare stems through winter, says the RHS. Yet its flowers have little or no scent, according to Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. The jasmine in perfume is a different plant, and a very different smell.

What does a jasmine candle actually smell like?

Perfumers mostly use two kinds of white jasmine. One is big-flowered jasmine, grown in places like India, France and Morocco. The other is sambac jasmine, also called Arabian jasmine.

The Perfume Society describes jasmine as a sweet floral with a musky side. It also says jasmine from different places can smell quite different. Some smell sweet, some green, some almost medicinal.

What is indole in jasmine?

Indole is a natural chemical found in white flowers like jasmine and orange blossom. On its own, The Perfume Society says pure indole smells like mothballs. Diluted a lot, it gives jasmine its warm, heady edge.

Real jasmine or a jasmine fragrance oil?

Real jasmine is one of the costliest flowers in perfume. It takes around 8,000 hand-picked blooms to make just one millilitre of jasmine absolute. An absolute is the thick, oily extract taken from the flowers.

In the past, makers pressed fresh flowers into fat to soak up their scent. They called this enfleurage. Today, makers usually use a solvent to draw the scent out instead.

Because of that cost, perfumers often make jasmine in a lab, The Perfume Society notes. That is common across perfume. It keeps a jasmine scent within reach for everyday things like candles.

  • Absolute: real flowers, very costly
  • Lab-made: common, and far easier to source
  • Indole: the part that adds warmth

Floral candle scents for darker months

Floral scents are not just for spring. A soft floral can lift a room on a grey afternoon. In winter, try florals blended with something warm, like vanilla or fruit. Merry Macaron in our 2026 Advent Calendar does this, with raspberry, strawberry, vanilla cream and a touch of rose.

White flowers like jasmine can feel strong in a small space. If a floral feels like too much, move it to a bigger room. Or burn it for a shorter time and let the room rest.

Quick answers

Is there real jasmine in a jasmine candle?

Sometimes, but often not. Real jasmine absolute takes thousands of flowers per millilitre, so lab-made jasmine is common. Either way, you get that sweet, heady white flower smell.

What scents go well with jasmine?

Other white flowers, like orange blossom, are natural partners. Rose and soft green notes work well too. Vanilla softens it for a cosier winter feel.

If florals are your thing, it is worth trying them in small doses first. The tealights in our Advent Calendar let you test 12 scents across December, one door at a time.
