Scented Tealight Candles: Where to Put Them and Why

Scented tealight candles look tiny and harmless. That is exactly why people put them in places they would never put a big jar candle. The edge of the bath. The top of the telly. A plastic tray on the windowsill. With the dark coming in before five now, more of us are lighting a few each evening. So here is where they belong, and where they don't.

Scented tealight candles get hotter than they look

A tealight sits in a thin metal cup. Once the wax melts, that cup gets very hot, and so does whatever is underneath it.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service says it plainly in its candle safety leaflet. Tealights get very hot and can melt plastic surfaces, including baths and televisions. It is an easy thing to forget.

So the rule is simple. A tealight always goes in a holder, and the holder goes on something that can take heat.

What is the best holder for scented tea light candles?

Glass, ceramic or metal, with a flat base and sides that come up past the cup. A holder like this stops the tealight sliding and keeps heat off the surface below. Clear glass also lets more of that warm glow out into the room.

Where to put scented tea candles in a winter home

Pick a spot you walk past, not a spot you forget. You want to see the flame from where you sit. Good places include a stone hearth with no fire lit, a kitchen worktop away from the hob, or a wide shelf with nothing above it.

The same leaflet also warns against grouping candles close together, because the flames can flare. Give each holder a little room of its own. Keep tealights away from curtains, cards and draughts from the front door.

  • Never on plastic, including the bath edge
  • Never on top of the TV
  • Never under a shelf
  • Never moved while the wax is liquid

Burn one, enjoy it, put it out

Each tealight in our 2026 Advent Calendar burns for 3 to 4 hours. That fits a December evening well. Light it when you sit down after tea, and put it out before bed.

We built these tealights on a four-footed base for a steady flame. A good base helps, but the holder and the surface still matter most. Put candles out before you leave the room, every time.

Quick answers

Can you put tealights on a plastic surface?

No. Tealights get hot enough to melt plastic, including baths and TV tops. Always use a glass, ceramic or metal holder, and stand it on a surface that can take heat.

How long does a scented tealight burn?

It depends on the tealight, so check the label. The ones in our Advent Calendar burn for 3 to 4 hours. That makes one tealight a good fit for a single evening, lit after dinner and put out before bed.

Twenty-four doors means twenty-four evenings of choosing where your tealight goes. Set up one safe, heat-proof spot now, and December takes care of itself. Have a look at the Glow Collection Advent Calendar if you would like a fresh tealight to look forward to each night.
