Candle Wick Trimmer Tips: Why 5mm Is the Length to Aim For

A black blob on the end of your wick. A sooty ring around the jar. A flame that jumps and smokes. All three point to the same fix, and a candle wick trimmer is the tool for it. With the clocks going back this Sunday, most of us will light more candles over the next few months. A quick trim before each burn is the easiest habit to start now.

How to Use a Candle Wick Trimmer Properly

UK trading standards advice is simple. Tower Hamlets Trading Standards says to trim wicks to 5mm before use.

Fire services agree on the reason. Cheshire Fire and Rescue says trimming stops the flame from getting too large. A smaller flame is also easier to keep an eye on.

Always trim a cold candle. Wait until the wax has set hard. Then snip off the black tip in one go, and lift the clipping out of the jar.

Why does my candle wick go black and lumpy?

That lump is called mushrooming. It is a cap of soot on a wick left too long. Trim it away before you light up again, and the next flame will sit calm and upright.

What a Wick Trimmer Does That Scissors Cannot

Kitchen scissors work on a new candle. Once the wax drops a few centimetres, they stop reaching.

A wick trimmer has long handles and a bent head. It reaches down into a deep jar and cuts flat, close to the wax. The little ledge on the blade catches the clipping, so it does not fall into the wax.

No trimmer to hand? These work in a pinch:

  • Nail clippers, for a candle that is still nearly full
  • A dry tissue, to pinch off a cold, crumbly tip
  • Small scissors, held sideways in a wide jar

Whatever you use, keep the wax clean. Clippings and spent matches do not belong in the jar.

Wick Care for Tealights and Three-Wick Jars

On a three-wick candle, trim all three to the same length. Matching lengths keep the three flames even. Tealights have short wicks set at the factory, so most need no trim. If one looks long or bent, give it a gentle snip. Keep a row of them 8 to 10cm apart, and stop a jar candle when about 1cm of wax is left.

Quick answers

How short should a candle wick be?

About 5mm before each light. That is the length UK trading standards advice gives. Any longer and the flame can grow too large, which is the main reason to trim.

How often should you trim a candle wick?

Every time, before you light it. It takes a few seconds once the wax is cold. If the flame grows tall or starts to smoke mid-burn, put it out, let it cool, then trim.

Fruity is the biggest-selling fragrance family across the Glow range. Whatever your favourite, a neat wick is the best place to start. If you want 24 nights of practice, our 2026 Advent Calendar has a scented tealight behind every door, ready to light from 1 December.
