You light your favourite candle, and for ten minutes the room smells lovely. Then it seems to vanish. A friend walks in and says the house smells amazing. Strong scented candles do not run out of scent that fast. In most cases, your nose has simply stopped paying attention. Here is what is going on, and why the coffee bean trick does not help.
Why Strong Scented Candles Seem to Fade
Scientists call it olfactory habituation, which means your brain turning down a smell it keeps meeting. A 2017 study in Scientific Reports describes it as a reduced response to continuous or repeated smells. You do not choose it. It just happens.
The same study found that some smells fade faster than others. The make-up of the scent itself plays a part. So a candle you love can seem weak to you while it still fills the room for everyone else.
This is useful, not a fault. Your nose is built to notice change. A smell that stays the same stops being news.
Why can I smell other people's candles but not mine?
You walk into their home fresh. Your nose has not met that scent yet, so it reads strong. In your own home, you have been breathing it for an hour.
The Coffee Bean Myth, Tested
Perfume counters often offer a jar of coffee beans to reset your nose. It sounds clever. The research does not back it up.
In a 2011 study in Perceptual and Motor Skills, students smelled a set of fragrances. Then they sniffed coffee beans, lemon slices or plain air. Next, they tried to pick out a scent they had not smelled before. Coffee beans did no better than lemon or plain air.
It was a small study, so treat it as a strong hint rather than the final word. Still, there is no good reason to keep a bowl of beans by the candle.
How to Notice Your Candle Fragrance Again
The easiest fix is to leave the room. Pop out for a few minutes, then walk back in. Many people find the scent greets them again at the door.
- Step outside or into another room
- Open a window for some fresh air
- Ask a visitor what they notice
- Swap scents from night to night
That last tip is why a mix of fragrances works so well in winter. Each new scent arrives as news.
Quick answers
Why can't I smell my candle anymore?
Most likely your nose has got used to it. Your brain turns down a smell it keeps meeting. Leave the room for a few minutes, then come back in.
Do coffee beans reset your sense of smell?
Not in the research. A 2011 study found coffee beans did no better than lemon slices or plain air at helping people pick out a new scent.
