Fragrant Candles for a Slow Autumn Evening Wind-Down

Fragrant candles are at their best on a slow autumn evening. The clocks go back this Sunday, and from then on it gets dark before most of us are home. That long, dark stretch can feel like a gift if you give it a shape. A candle is an easy way to mark the start of your quiet hour. Here is how to build a simple wind-down ritual around one, and how to end it safely.

Why Fragrant Candles Suit an Autumn Wind-Down

A wind-down is the calm hour before bed. The NHS says a calm bedtime routine can help you get ready for sleep. It suggests things like reading, gentle music or breathing exercises. It also suggests keeping the same routine on days off.

A candle will not do the work for you. What it can do is act as a signal. When the flame is lit, the day is done. Over a few weeks, the scent becomes part of the habit. Many people find that comforting on a wet, dark evening.

What is a good scent for the evening?

Soft, warm scents tend to suit the evening best. Think vanilla, gentle fruit or a little spice. Save sharp citrus and mint for the morning, when you want the room to feel bright.

A Simple Evening Candle Ritual

Keep it short and easy to repeat. Five steps is plenty.

  • Light the candle when you start to slow down.
  • Put your phone face down, away from you.
  • Read, listen to music or just sit still.
  • Put the candle out before you leave the room.
  • Head to bed once the room is dark.

The phone step matters. The NHS suggests staying off phones, tablets and laptops for an hour before bed. A lit candle is a nice reason to put the screen down.

Scented Tea Candles and Safety Before Bed

A tealight is the right size for this hour. Each tealight in the Glow Advent Calendar burns for 3 to 4 hours, so you will always put it out long before it ends.

Always put it out. Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service says never leave a lit candle alone, and to use a snuffer or a spoon. Never fall asleep with a candle burning.

Quick answers

Is it safe to burn a candle in the bedroom?

It is fine while you are awake and in the room, in a fire-resistant holder. Put it out before you get into bed. Never leave it burning while you sleep.

How long should I burn a candle in the evening?

About an hour suits a wind-down. That gives the scent time to fill the room. Then put it out before you go to bed, even if there is plenty of wax left.

From 1 December, the Glow Advent Calendar gives you a new tealight for every night of your wind-down. There are 24 doors, so that is 24 evenings with a different scent to look forward to.
